5 Best Prescribed Medicines of Islam According to the Quran and Sunnah

Islam is not a religion of worshipping only. Rather it is the only religion that covers all the areas of life. Islam puts a special emphasizes on hygiene, physical health and mental wellbeing. “Allah did not create a disease for which He did not also create a cure”

According to Quran,

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ ٨٠

And He ˹alone˺ heals me when I am sick.

(Al-Quran 26: 80)

Medicines in Quran and Sunnah

In many hadiths we find medical directions to maintain our health. The medicines Prophet Muhammad PBUH used for health are also called traditional medicines.

Those traditional medicines should be used with the consultation of your physician. Because if you take a dose in wrong way with wrong quantity, it can be harmful for you.

Black Seed

Either it is the matter of digestion or respiration, black seed (cumin seed) is highly recommended in traditional medications. It is not only used in kitchen spices rather it has wonderful properties of antioxidant or anti-inflammatory diets.

Prophet Muhammad SAWW said,

“Use the black seed, because it contains a cure for every type of ailment except death”

It has amazing properties that increase the immune system of human body.

Honey

Honey is best prescribed diet and medicine in Quran and Sunnah. Allah SWT mentioned in Quran,

ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ فَٱسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًۭا ۚ يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌۭ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ فِيهِ شِفَآءٌۭ لِّلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ٦٩

“And feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect”.

(Quran 16: 69)

The yellowish sweet nectar called honey is the best healing remedy. Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to say it ‘a best medicine’.

It is also called a food of Jannah. The antibacterial possessions of honey give multiple benefits to human body. Proper use of honey maintains your physical and mental health. It is good for your eyesight, skin, heart diseases and control the blood pressure.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a recommended Islamic diet. Prophet Muhammad SAWW said to his companions,

“Eat the olive and anoint with it, for indeed it is from a blessed tree.”

It is also mentioned in Quran,

وَشَجَرَةًۭ تَخْرُجُ مِن طُورِ سَيْنَآءَ تَنۢبُتُ بِٱلدُّهْنِ وَصِبْغٍۢ لِّلْـَٔاكِلِينَ ٢٠

“As well as ˹olive˺ trees which grow at Mount Sinai, providing oil and a condiment to eat”.

Al-Quran 23: 20

There is large amount of Vitamin E found in olive oil. It is also used on skin for its health and flexibility.

Dates

Taking dates in empty stomach helps to control your blood pressure and heart disease. That’s why it is recommended in Sunnah to break your fast in Ramadan with dates. It also maintains sugar level of human body.

Dates are prescribed as a best diet for a pregnant woman. It contain a large amount of calcium, fluoride, and magnesium, necessary nutrients good for health.

Milk

Milk is the biggest and great source of calcium. Since birth of human, the ever first and best diet is considered his mother feed. Goat milk, cow milk and camel milk is also prescribed in Sunnah.

Allah SWT says in Quran,

وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ لَعِبْرَةًۭ ۖ نُّسْقِيكُم مِّمَّا فِى بُطُونِهِۦ مِنۢ بَيْنِ فَرْثٍۢ وَدَمٍۢ لَّبَنًا خَالِصًۭا سَآئِغًۭا لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ ٦٦

“And there is certainly a lesson for you in cattle: We give you to drink of what is in their bellies, from between digested food and blood: pure milk, pleasant to drink”.

Al-Quran 16: 66

In the same way Prophet Muhammad SAWW also said,

Hence, get yourself treated by cow’s milk for indeed I hope that Allah will put cure in it as it eats from all types of trees”..

We should add these best recommended remedies in our daily diet. They are not only going to give us physical health, rather we will be also rewarded to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAWWA as well.
